A joint state and federal government project will see $4.1 million spent to add a third right-turn lane from Five Islands Road into Springhill Road.
"Five Islands and Springhill roads are key commuter and freight routes within the southern region, forming a critical link on the road network," a Roads and Maritime Services spokeswoman said.
"This upgrade will meet the demands of the increasing vehicles using the intersection and improve traffic efficiency through Cringila."
The upgrade will see three lanes needed on Springhill Road for traffic turning right.

This will see the slip lane for eastbound motorists on Five Islands Road into Springhill Road converted into a merge lane.
Early work on the project will take place on July 3, 4 and 7 between 7.30pm and 4am.
It will see the removal of the centre median on Springhill Road and utility relocation.
Temporary lane closures and a 40km/h speed limit will be in place while work is carried out.
The upgrade is expected to take six months to complete.
