But, to the dismay of some, the level crossing at the station that links the two platforms will be removed.
Transport for NSW has approved the project, which will include two lifts linking the station to the Elliotts Road overpass, new stairs and a ramp at platform two and improved toilet facilities.
Planning approval was granted late last month, with detailed design work due to take place after the project has gone out to tender.
Construction is expected to start later this year and take 12 months to complete, with the two sets of stairs to remain in place.
After the proposed upgrade went on exhibition in May this year, 12 public submissions were made - many of them expressed a desire to retain the level crossing at the northern end of the platform.
However, the determination report made it clear this was not an option; it will be removed in accordance with the Transport for NSW Level Crossing Closures Policy.
"Due to the safety risk associated with these crossings, where alternative access exists or has been created, level crossings are to be closed where possible."
Others suggested retaining it to provide access to platform one if the lifts were ever out of order.
The report stated breakdowns were "a rare occurrence" when lifts were regularly serviced.
"In the unlikely event of a lift breakdown, alternative arrangements would be made for any affected customers who are unable to exit the station via the station stairs," the report stated.
It added that a "lift management strategy" would be put in place.
One submission claimed the lifts were not needed to the "infrequent train services" at Fairy Meadow.
As per the conditions of development consent construction can only take place between 7am and 6pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 1pm on Saturday.
Construction work will not be allowed to take place on Sundays and public holidays.
