However, if you are preparing to sell your property over this period, there are a series of inexpensive ideas that could help turn your open house into a sold house.
TAFE NSW Yallah landscape construction teacher Rob Wardlaw said while the property market had experienced a slump during recent times, "things are picking up a little".
"This is the time of year where people are thinking about selling, but as far as your garden is concerned and making the most out of what you've got, now's the time to act," he said.
He said attention to detail was vital, and emphasised that with regard to prospective buyers, first impressions last.
Therefore, he had some suggestions on boosting your home's aesthetic appeal and making a strong first impression on prospective buyers.
Mr Wardlaw said there were plenty of cost-effective measures sellers could undertake in terms of landscaping.
"Maximising your street appeal is something that's not overly expensive and can easily be neglected while you're living there," he said.
"Unless you're selling, you don't really think about it.
"But if you've got a front lawn, by greening that right up and getting that vibrant and looking healthy, that really helps.
"If you've got a front garden, weed it out, and prune your shrubs and trees to give them a bit of shape. And also mulch your garden beds.
"Touches like that are inexpensive, but you get good bang for buck doing it that way."
Mr Wardlaw said if your property is set back into the block, there are other measures you could take to ensure you make the most of surroundings.
"If you can see a space that you can utilise (for) western views, eastern views or northern views, or even southern views, where you can often put in a little deck or a paved patio, that's a good idea," he said.
"So if you're selling and someone wants to come and look at your house, they can stop, look around and see that aspect, and see the value... In the landscape outside your block, the vista.
"Making the most out of that, and utilising what aspect you've got is important."
His other tips to freshen your place up included using some old or leftover paint to touch up the paintwork around pergolas, pergola posts, guttering and even the front of your house.
He also advised to do some planting if possible.
"If you want to accent your front door, make your front entrance look a bit grander or larger, try planting some feature trees either side to make that front entrance stand out a bit," he said.
Mr Wardlaw said if you want to make changes to your home but are struggling for inspiration, try driving around nearby streets to see what others have done.
"Have a look around, see what other people are doing, or have a look in lifestyle magazines and get some ideas from that," he said.
"Sometimes you just need that little bit of inspiration."
