State service to farewell Wollongong-born judge Jane Mathews

Justice Mathews, who was born in Wollongong, boarded at Frensham School in Mittagong and worked as a judge in the district, supreme and federal courts - died in August 31 at the age of 78.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian on Friday said she had left an indelible mark on the state's legal profession and paved the way for women.

"On behalf of the people of NSW, I extend my deepest sympathies to Justice Mathews' family," Ms Berejiklian said.

"She was intelligent, down-to-earth and highly respected in the legal profession."
