He wasn't favoured to win his section and was the outsider in the knockout rounds, but Warilla's Jamie Nabbe is a proud bolter of the South Pacific carnival, after advancing to the singles quarter-finals.Nabbe easily won his section last Wednesday and at Woonona Bowling Club on Saturday knocked out Dapto's Ray Connell 25-8 and Albion Park's Warren Turner 25-14, to reach the last eight.Warilla are bulging with talent, including world No 1 Leif Selby, Jeremy Henry and Sean Mawdsley, but anyone looking for Jamie Nabbe's name would need to search the No 5 Grade pennant teams.Nabbe freely admits he's the odd man out of the eight remaining bowlers chasing the singles crown."Every one of those other guys must be a grade one pennant player, Premier League player, state rep or higher," Nabbe said."Two hundred players entered the singles and now there's only eight left. I'm proud to be among them." Most people will expect Nabbe to be handed a severe reality check in the quarter-finals when he faces defending champion and reigning player of the carnival Matt Sargeant. But Nabbe isn't fazed by the David v Goliath match-up. "He's a great player, but I'm not worried. He's got to beat me, I'm not going to beat me."If you think making the singles quarter-finals has exhausted Nabbe's 15 minutes of bowls fame you'd be wrong. Just a few months ago he won the Illawarra District Reserve Singles for bowlers in grades 5-7, then made the State Reserve Singles semi-finals.He rates that semi-final appearance his career highlight; though that might change if he can cause the boilover of the tournament and beat Sargeant.Meantime, the 50 singles section winners were reduced to just eight players after Saturday's three knockout rounds.Big guns Steve Glasson, Shane Garvey, Matt Sargeant and Troy Somerville are in the last eight, while Cabramatta's Michael Clarke edged out 2010 champion John Green 25-23 in the round of 32, then beat Mt Pritchard's Warren Hopley 25-22 in the round of 16.NSW State Senior Singles champion Rick Malley, having a great tournament, came from 14-8 down to beat Towradgi's Mal Lyons 25-19. Malley now takes on Garvey for a spot in the semi-finals.Somerville was pushed all the way by Towradgi's Eddie Tolhurst, winning 25-23 and now takes on Michael Clarke in the quarter-finals. Glasson reached the final last year and looks in ominous form after beating Woonona's Damien Lateo 25-7 in the round of 16.
