* Rory Burns - Matches: 5, innings: 10, runs scored: 390, average 39.00.
Came into the series under pressure and with question marks over his unorthodox technique. However, he performed admirably at the top of the order with one century and two 50s. Rating: 8.
* Jason Roy - Matches: 4, innings: 8, runs scored: 110, average: 13.9.
Struggled to transfer his explosive white ball form to the Test arena as Australia's quicks worked him over throughout the series. Bowled four times, with his technique evidently not suited to red ball cricket. Rating: 2.
* Joe Denly - Matches: 5, innings: 10, runs scored: 312, average 31.2.
Shifted up and down the order throughout the series and although he never looked totally convincing, he deserves credit for two battling half-centuries and a 94. Took the catch of the series at Lord's to dismiss Tim Paine. Rating: 7.
* Joe Root - Matches: 5, innings: 10, runs scored: 325, average 32.5 wickets: 3.
A difficult series for the England skipper that saw him fail to convert four 50s into three figures and be dismissed for two golden ducks and one on the second ball. His batting form has tailed off since taking over the captaincy, where he averages 36 compared to 54 without it. Rating: 6.
* Ben Stokes - Matches: 5, innings: 10, runs scored: 441, average: 55.12, wickets 8.
Proved he's the most dynamic cricketer in the world with the innings of a lifetime to win the third Test at Headingley for England. A superb spell of bowling in that match did as much to set up that win. An outstanding series also saw him make two unbeaten hundreds and a pair of fifties. Rating: 9.5.
* Jonny Bairstow - Matches: 5, innings 10, runs scored: 214, average: 23.77.
Not a great series with the bat for the fiery Yorkshireman, who kept well behind the stumps but failed to make a big score with just one 50 to his name. Rating: 4.
* Jos Buttler - Matches: 5, innings 10, runs scored: 247, average 24.7.
Improved as the series progressed with 70 and 47 in the last match at The Oval but chalked up four single-figure scores in the first three Tests. Rating: 5.
* Chris Woakes - Matches: 4, innings: 7, runs scored: 120, average 20, wickets 10.
A mixed series with the ball that saw him dismiss Steve Smith three times but not pose the regular threat offered by Archer and Broad. Scored some handy runs. Rating: 6.
* Jofra Archer - Matches: 5, innings: 7, runs scored: 48, average: 6.85, wickets 22.
What a find for England. Capable of bowling at speeds of over 155km/h but showed he can also reduce his pace successfully to suit the conditions. Took two six-wickets hauls in just four Tests. Has been likened to Dale Steyn by David Warner. Rating: 9.
* Jack Leach - Matches: 4, innings: 7, runs scored: 54, average: 13.5, wickets 12.
The bespectacled cult hero of the Barmy Army after his heroic one not out in England's amazing win at Headingley. More of a containing left-arm spinner than a match-winning one. His no ball after dismissing Smith at Old Trafford cost over 100 runs. Rating: 6.
* Stuart Broad - Matches: 5, innings: 9, runs scored: 61, average: 12.2, wickets: 23.
The old warhorse had yet another magnificent home Ashes series, creating havoc for Australia's plethora of left-handers. Stepped up magnificently to lead the England attack after injury ruled Jimmy Anderson out of the series. At 33 it may be the last time Australia face him - something they won't be too upset about. Rating: 9.
* Craig Overton - Matches: 1, innings: 2, runs scored: 26, average: 13, wickets 2.
The giant paceman was selected for the fourth Test at Old Trafford and bowled well on occasions without reward. Hung around stubbornly with the bat as Australia battled for the victory that retained the urn. Rating: 5.
* Sam Curran - Matches: 1, innings: 2, runs scored 32, average: 16, wickets: 3.
The highly rated left-arm medium-pacer took three wickets in Australia's first innings at The Oval in his only appearance in the series. Didn't make much of an impression with the bat. Rating: 7.
* Moeen Ali - Matches: 1 innings: 2, runs scored: 4, average: 2, wickets: 3.
Axed after England's heavy first Test defeat at Edgbaston where Nathan Lyon continued his hold over the spinning allrounder by dismissing him for the ninth time in six Tests. Also struggled with the ball as his confidence hit rock bottom. Rating: 1.
