Founded in 2006 by Dr Mal Eutick and based in Wollongong since 2017, the Eutick Memorial Still Life Award has become a premier still life award.
Still life painting emerged in Europe in the 16th Century. It traditionally involved arrangements of fruit, flowers and natural objects - dead or alive.
Famous still life painters include Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Henri Matisse, Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol.
EMSLA director Dr Leigh Summers said artists had continued to paint still life because "it challenges one's talent".
"Whether you're a very contemporary, abstract artist, or your forte is more realism, still life is there, testing your powers because it's very difficult to paint a convincing still life artwork," she said.
"It's difficult because it demands an understanding of the subject matter... Like all good art, it requires deep engagement."
She said the 2019 edition had received a record number of entries, including works by 20 Illawarra artists, as well as entries from across NSW, Victoria, Queensland and the ACT.
More than 170 artists have submitted paintings in the hope of taking out the $20,000 prize money.
Entries close on Friday.
The winner will be announced on November 8 during a gala exhibition opening at Project Contemporary Artspace, Wollongong.
The finalists' works will then be on display until December 1.
EMSLA was launched at Project Contemporary Artspace on Friday.
