Since their inception in 2012, the Wanderers have never won more than four games in a season. They finished last on the ladder in their last campaign with just one victory.

But in a sign that something has shifted, the Wanderers started this season with a thrilling 2-1 win over Adelaide United last weekend - their first round-one win.

To do so without new internationals Lynn Williams (USA) and Denise O'Sullivan (Republic of Ireland) was enough to show Heffernan he has assembled a special group this season.

"It's easy for people to judge teams from the outside but I can only comment on what I've seen at the moment," he said.

"I've been in a lot of teams that have gone on to challenge for titles and things like that and I haven't been involved in too many that already have this kind of togetherness, so we're very lucky. We just have to make sure we continue that."

The potential of the team was cemented for Heffernan when Williams and O'Sullivan were brought into their first day of training.

After their own session, the pair stayed around to cheer on their new teammates as they were put through fitness drills.

"You don't see that too often," Heffernan said.

"There's a good special feeling around the group at the moment and the girls that have come in and just carried on with that.

"It's amazing to have girls of that calibre here but we're more impressed with how they are as people first.

"Seeing that at training on Monday how they hung around and helped the players through their physical work was brilliant to watch.

"We know what they can do on the field and, after seeing that, for the squad and what it takes to win things, there's definitely that togetherness now and the way they've blended into the group has been great."

The Wanderers will aim to keep up the momentum when they play Newcastle on Friday night at Bankwest Stadium.
