The festive season is a time to kick back and relax after a long year; watch eyes bulge and smiles widen as kids spot their new toys from under the tree; chorus classic Christmas carols from chimney tops; bask in the summer sun in your boardshorts to laze away on beach days.
Three million people in Australia don't get that chance, for this is not a merry time for many families. Many will spend Christmas alone or even on the streets.
In the Illawarra particularly, there has been a significant rise in the number of people in poverty.
"A lot more people have come into the centres than in previous years ... four times more," Salvation Army Relations Manager for the Illawarra Karen Walker said.
It's one of the hardest times of the year for people living in poverty, but with your help in the Illawarra, it doesn't have to be.
This December, the Salvation Army will be at the forefront of the cause, providing support with the support from you.
Volunteers from the organisation aim to serve more than 100,000 meals and more than 500,000 gifts to over 70,000 families with operations occurring all around Australia, including the Illawarra.
As well as the distribution of much needed resources, the Salvation Army will be hosting family charity events throughout the season to encourage everyone to get into that special Christmas Spirit.
To start the season and satisfy your sweet tooth, treat yourself to a Gingerbread House Decorating Workshop, which will be taking place at the Wollongong Salvation Army Centre at 2pm on December 7.
"We're raising money for a project called Women of Work ... for rural women in Kenya," said Ms Walker. She said there would also be stalls to purchase an assortment of products on the day.
The cost is $40 and entry is required electronically via wollongong@salvationarmy.org.au by Monday, November 25.
But wait, there's more. On December 15 from 6pm, Wollongong will be whisked away for a night of carolling and musical majesty as the Salvation Army partners with the Disability Trust to bring you the Santa Fest Carols 2019 at Lang Park.
"For our Santa Fest Event, we have markets and special guests," said Walker.
Come Christmas Day, a special Christmas Day service will be held at Wollongong Salvos on 11-13 Burelli Street, Wollongong, scheduled for a 9am start.
Ms Walker welcomes all to donate and participate in the fun filled events in the 'Gong. "Whether you are by yourself, or with friends and family, Christmas is a time that is best spent together," she said.
"So, join us, so we can share the true spirit of Christmas,".
