The side finished Cricket Illawarra's Twenty20 double header day with one win and a loss. The day started well as Wollongong had few problems in overcoming Dapto at North Dalton Park.
Captain Duncan Maddinson said he was pleased with Wollongong's bowling attack, led by Truman Driscoll (2/26) and Luke Day (2/20), restricting Dapto to 8/119.
"Truman and Luke bowled tightly through the middle overs, they were able to group a lot of dot balls together which brought us wickets," Maddinson said.
In reply, Wollongong lost opener David Studholme early, but the side cruised to victory in the 15th over.
Kieran Gray blasted 52 runs off 28 balls while Lachlan Maddinson (31no off 19) finished the job as they sealed victory for the loss of just three wickets.
"The return of Kieran Gray helps, it was his first game since the semi-finals last year," Maddinson said.
"He looked like he did when he was last playing cricket. He batted with ease at the top of the order."
In contrast, game two proved a nightmare at Judy Masters Oval. David Murphy (62) and Adam Berwick (56) were the catalysts as Balgownie smashed 6/227.
Luke Maddinson smashed 73 runs for Wollongong, but it wasn't enough as the visitors finished on 9/173.
"Our first five overs with the ball were pretty poor," Maddinson said. " There was a lot of loose bowling, which gave Murphy and Berwick a good start each and they sort of just went on from there.
"We were always sort of out of the game really."
