This weekend
Each week, this section features a host of events taking place in the Illawarra, from fundraisers and community events to live music and arts activities. With new restrictions on mass gatherings due to the coronavirus pandemic, the majority of these types of events won't be taking place for the foreseeable future. So we've compiled a list of suggestions of ways you can get out of the house and enjoy some sunshine, while still adhering to social-distancing guidelines.
Bushwalking
Illawarra
The Illawarra is home to numerous free bushwalks, ranging from short and easy to long and adventurous. For a series of maps, click here. Safe walking tips: don't walk alone; take plenty of water and food; wear sunscreen, a hat plus suitable clothing and footwear; tell someone where you're going.
Museum trail
Illawarra
Hit the road to find out more about Wollongong's social, industrial and environmental heritage. Download the brochure at www.lostwollongong.com.
Fundraiser
Mother's Day
The Mother's Day Classic Foundation raises funds for breast cancer research. The foundation has made the decision that all MDC events in 2020 will be held virtually rather than physically. Organisers challenge participants to walk or run 4km - anytime, anywhere, in your living room, at the local park or even in your backyard - on or before Mother's Day 2020. Register online at www.mothersdayclassic.com.au.
Stay active
Things to do
Play golf - you're with a small group, and you're not in a confined space. Play foot golf - at Russell Vale golf course, 3pm-6pm Monday-Friday, noon-6pm Sunday. Book a tennis court - same logic as golf, no need to be too close to anyone.
Tourism, business
Spend some money
You could visit a brewery or winery, or head down the South Coast and spend money in a bushfire-affected town. You could also grab a coffee from a local cafe and support small business.
Family activities
Illawarra
You could go for a drive as a family to Sea Cliff Bridge or Berry, or visit the Minamurra Rainforest or Illawarra Fly. Have a picnic at a local lookout such as Mount Saddleback, or visit the Wollongong Botanic Garden or Wollongong Art Gallery. You could also go shell hunting at Bushrangers Bay or a local beach. If you've got a favourite fishing spot, why not head there?
In the yard
Activities
Plant a vegetable garden - instead of rushing the shops, plan ahead to grow your own. And in four to six weeks you'll have a fresh bounty.
Neighbourhood
Ways to help
Find an elderly neighbour in your street - maybe make a callout via social media - and do their shopping for them. Be sure to leave it on the step, though.
