But when Amelia Thomas-Nicholls married the love of her life in Wollongong on Wednesday in front of just two people, she had never felt happier.
"This is not how I imagined my wedding would be but we were always going to have a small wedding anyway. Originally we had planned for 15 people. Obviously with the COVID-19 restrictions that wasn't possible. But I couldn't be happier that we've been able to get married today," the 24-year-old bride told the Mercury.
Celebrant Gary Clarke presided over the wedding of Amelia and Daniel Nicholls at the Old Courthouse in Wollongong.
While the newlyweds were disappointed their family could not attend, they felt the celebration ended up more "intimate and special" as a result.
Mrs Thomas-Nicholls added the couple, who live in Miranda, gave little thought to pushing back their wedding plans and waiting for the COVID-19 restrictions to end.
"We always wanted to get married on April Fools' day and we were not going to wait a year to do it," she said.
"It is such a fun day and since they were still allowing weddings to go ahead we jumped at the chance.
"As luck would have it this beautiful venue we chose is one of only two that stayed open during the whole COVID-19 mess.
"I guess this wedding was meant to be."
The wedding was also meant to be captured by Mercury photographer Adam McLean.
"We were actually 45 minutes early for our wedding. That is the only reason the photographer spotted us," Mrs Thomas-Nicholls said.
"This was just the perfect location for us. It is so nice and beautiful, and the ocean is right there, you feel so connected to nature.
"And the fantastic and funny turn of events involving your photographer makes it extra special.
"We are so grateful."
