Business administration manager Lisa Kelsey local enterprises urgently needed help now from the local community and the Big Tick has been created to highlight those still open for business or trading in a reduced capacity.
"As many of the businesses in our local government area have had to drastically change their business model to continue to trade in some capacity we have gone from what is normally a vibrant tourist seaside town, to a virtual ghost town," she said.
"Our local businesses are now more dependent than ever on the support of local residents and the Big Tick is another avenue for us to help promote our 'Think, Shop and Buy Local" initiative.
Ms Kelsey's said examples of businesses still trading were a local florist has had to close the doors but is still fully operational for phone and online orders with a normal delivery service. And a day spa/beautician have been forced to close but are still selling products and gift vouchers.
Such businesses are able to display a Big Tick poster from the chamber in their window with the changes to the business noted on it.
The Illawarra Mercury has launched a Taking Care of Business campaign.
Each day we will highlight a local business who is adapting or evolving to be able to keep operating under these trying times.
If you know of a business adapting, please send us an email titled Taking Care of Business to gellis@illawarramercury.com.au.
We have also put a call out and will run a list of cafes, restaurants and clubs who are offering takeaway or delivery on our Facebook page. If you know of an outlet now offering home delivery or takeaway, please let us know and add it to the list.
