Neighbourhood Forum 5, which covers central Wollongong, has decided to support a request from Forum 7, which covers Lake Heights.
They will push for the NSW Government-owned Land and Housing Corporation to withdraw the blocks at 6-8 Grand View Pde from sale, saying that their existence is a mistake.
"The availability of the blocks for sale is as a result of a historical planning mistake when the Lake Heights Estate was developed in the 1950's," Forum 5's minutes state.
"The parcels of land below the fig tree should have been earmarked as public open space. Support for opposing the Government'''s sale is endorsed."
An auction is planned for June 27. An attempt to sell the land last year was withdrawn after reports on the tree's heritage listing.
