Football South Coast has asked local councils for help with the financial hit taken during the shutdown period.

Randwick Council announced this week it would waive ground hire costs for not-for-profit sporting clubs. FSC chief executive officer Ann-Marie Balliana said a similar move would be appreciated here because "our clubs have been deeply impacted by sponsorship loss".

"If they could do something similar for the thousands of people involved in community football, we would be grateful," she said.

On Thursday, a Wollongong City Council spokesperson said council would consider any request for a "reduction or waive of fees at this challenging time".

"We are aware the coronavirus pandemic has put significant pressures on many in our community... we are working to support our clubs, reduce this impact and explore what options are available as community sports prepare for the lifting of restrictions," they said.

Shellharbour Council's General Manager Carey McIntyre said "sporting groups will be charged pro-rata fees according to usage". "Relief for additional COVID-19 related costs will be considered by requests," Mr McIntyre said.

A Kiama Municipal Council spokesperson said the Kiama Sports Association did not charge member clubs for their regular use of fields and reserves. "It levies a modest seasonal membership [affiliation] fee. Council provides the association with annual funding worth $30,000."
