The Eagles initially feared McGovern's season could be over after he injured his right hamstring in their round 17 win over St Kilda.

Scans cleared him of a serious tear, and his recovery has been so quick over the past fortnight that he's now considered a good chance to return to face the Magpies.

"I reckon he's a 73 per cent chance of playing is my gut feel at the moment. It was probably 70 at the start of the day, he's grown three per cent," Simpson said with a smile.

"When you see the injury the way he did it, you fear for the worst when they struggle to walk off the ground.

"But Gov's strengths have been pretty good from the day he started recovery.

"He's been able to take it pretty much as a standard hamstring.

"It's been two weeks today, and he's looking towards playing."

If McGovern is cleared to play, it means West Coast could welcome back up to six of their premiership stars.

Captain Luke Shuey (hamstrings), Jack Redden (fractured thumb), Lewis Jetta (calf), Mark Hutchings (hamstring), and Jamie Cripps (personal reasons) are all set to be available.

But Yeo has been ruled out for the rest of the season after failing to overcome a painful bout of osteitis pubis.

Yeo's explosiveness in the midfield will be sorely missed.

But Simpson likened the situation to when the Eagles found a way to overcome the loss of Andrew Gaff during their run to the flag in 2018.

"He (Yeo) is going to be hard to replace," Simpson said.

"But with Tim (Kelly) coming in this year, and with Luke and Gaffy and Reddo and Mark Hutchings back available, I think we still have the calibre to do some damage."

Shuey hasn't played since injuring both of his hamstrings in the Eagles' round 15 win over Essendon.

The 2018 Norm Smith medallist said he learnt a vital lesson that match.

"I had a little tweak of the right one in the third quarter, and we assessed it with the medicos, and I was completely fine running at three-quarter time," Shuey said.

"I pressed my case to go back on and was able to get back out there, and then unfortunately the left one went.

"I've probably got to learn not to push my case so much to go back on and make life hard for the medicos.

"Maybe I need to take a breath and just let them make the decision on their own."
