Lang and father John were part of Penrith's 2003 grand-final victory, the only time the Queensland State of Origin representative tasted premiership success in his 176-game career.

Now, 17 years later, Panthers halfback Cleary and father Ivan will join the Langs if they can guide Penrith to grand-final glory against Melbourne this weekend.

"I honestly think it's fantastic to share with a family member, such as your father," Lang told AAP.

"An exhilarating feeling for anyone to win one. I know people are obviously drawing comparisons with Nathan and Ivan Cleary but if they can win on Sunday night, fantastic for both of them.

"Obviously from Ivan's point of view to win one with your son, that's great, but I'm sure Ivan also would've liked to have won one years ago when he was coaching the Warriors.

"It probably adds a little something extra on top of that but it's just very, very difficult to win at the best of times let alone with a family member."

Lang spent his entire first-grade career at Cronulla and then the Panthers, playing with his father as coach.

He said the pair never had to formally discuss separating their family relationship from their professional one and his status as the coach's son was never an issue in the dressing room.

"It was always a bit of a topic of conversation but it wasn't an issue from my point of view," the hard-running former front-rower said.

"I was a player, went out there and did my job and I did it to the best of my ability and that was where it sort of ended.

"I will say this, the dynamic of my father and I working together as opposed to Nathan and Ivan Cleary is completely different. He's a playmaker, I wasn't.

"Very different sort of scenario there but still a father-son relationship and one that happens to be at Penrith in a grand final."
