Emergency services were called to a service station on the Hume Highway in Pheasants Nest about 11.45pm and found a 34-year-old man with a chest wound.
He was taken to Liverpool Hospital where he underwent surgery and remains in a critical but stable condition.
Police have been told that the incident may have been the result of an argument near the railway overpass on Remembrance Drive at Bargo about 11.30pm.
The injured man was being driven to hospital by a family member when his condition deteriorated and emergency services were called to the service station.
As police continue to investigate the report, a number of items have been seized for analysis. Investigators hope to speak further with the man once he is well enough.
Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Narellan Police or Crime Stoppers.
