Fire and Rescue NSW crews raced to the Nolan Street home after receiving a triple-zero call at 2.17am on Tuesday.
Firefighters from Unanderrra station arrived to find the single-storey home well alight, with smoke and flames coming out of the roof.
First responders called for more firefighters to attend as the blaze was threatening neighbouring homes.
Multiple crews from across the Wollongong region worked to contain the fire for more than two hours, stopping it from spreading to nearby properties.
Numerous residents were evacuated from Nolan Street. No injuries were reported. The Mercury understands the home's usual occupant wasn't home at the time.
The house was totally destroyed by fire and a car parked on the lawn was seriously damaged.
NSW Police are now working with Fire Investigators to determine the cause of the blaze.
