David Krowka was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis as a child, causing persistent lung infections and limiting his ability to breathe over time.
In 2016, his disease was pronounced as critical and he was placed on a transplant list.
He eventually underwent a double-lung transplant, which helped to lengthen his life and allowed him to spend more time with his family.
However, his lungs began to reject and his other organs were suffering.
In September 2019, doctors told him that he had six weeks to live.
However, he was determined to walk his sister Agie down the aisle, and be there to meet his new nephew and nieces.
Mr Krowka died on January 14, aged 26. His funeral service took place on Friday.
His long-time close friend Kate Linsley has launched a GoFundMe campaign so that his family wouldn't have to be concerned about funeral costs during this difficult time.
After setting an initial goal of $5000, more than $20,000 has been raised in less than a week.
"It's been incredible - we're just so overwhelmed with the support," Ms Linsley, 24, said.
"Everyone knew him, and he was just a very likeable, charismatic guy.
"Funds will go towards funeral costs, and also just supporting the family. His Mum was doing it tough as a full-time carer.
"I just wanted to help the family out at a difficult time... I know that's what he would have wanted. He was really stressed about leaving his family behind."
Ms Linsley said if any other community members were able to donate it would be most appreciated.
"Any donation counts, big or small really," she said.
"We didn't expect to get that much as it is."
