The deluge is causing Warragamba Dam to overflow, with the amount of water lost each day near the equivalent of Sydney Harbour.
Current projections by Water NSW indicate that this weather event could result in flooding similar in scale to the 1961 flood, with the dam spill likely to continue for days.
Albion Park Rail had recorded more than 100mm of rain between 9am Friday and 7:30am Monday, with the Bureau of Meteorology predicting up to another 100mm to fall across Monday and Tuesday.
Eight flood evacuation orders have been issued for the NSW mid-north coast - for low lying areas of Kempsey, Macksville, Port Macquarie, the lower Macleay, Wauchope and Rawdon Island, Taree and Wingham.
