The centre has teamed with Need a Feed to to offer the free pantry initiative on a fortnightly basis, starting from Tuesday, April 20.
Bulli Community Centre manager Elizabeth Brassaud said the goal was to lighten the financial burden that people face daily.
"Our aim is to help with one of life's basics, food, in the hope this service will free up funds for bills and other household expenses," she said.
"Nearly 21 per cent of the population throughout the Illawarra are low-income households and over 15 per cent of the population in Bulli are on a low-income.
"Community feedback has strongly indicated there is a need for more hand to mouth support in the northern suburbs. There are many families doing it really tough in the area."
Need a Feed founder Shaz Harrison believed the initiative would be a welcome relief for many.
"We are grateful to expand our reach to those in need by partnering with the Bulli Community Centre and have been helping to build up the food items in the 'pantry' over the past month by donating non-perishable food and pre-packed meals. Food will be given to people who are facing tough financial situations, those in need of a hand up and homelessness," Ms Harrison said.
Bakers Delight, Bulli, The Bakehouse in Corrimal, The Country Women's Association and Coles Thirroul have also helped get the initiative off the ground.
The free pantry at Bulli Community Centre will be open 9.30am to midday every second Tuesday.
