Ambulance paramedics treated the pedestrian, a man in in 90s, before transporting him to Wollongong Hospital in a stable condition with an injured hip.
Northbound traffic along Corrimal Street is heavy and is being diverted along Market Street, though one lane is now open to traffic.
Smith Street has been subject to recent substantial traffic changes due to Wollongong City Council installing a bike lane.
It is not clear at this stage whether the changed traffic conditions contributed in any way to the accident.
