SafeWork is investigating an incident at the old Wollongong gasworks site on Saturday morning that saw a man airlifted to hospital with a suspected spinal injury.

A 30-year-old man was flown to Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney after a metal framework fell against the cherry picker he was working in, 17 metres from the ground.

The man lost consciousness after the framework struck, and fellow workers called emergency services and lowered the platform to the ground.
When paramedics arrived the man was conscious, but had motor and sensory deficits that suggested a possible spinal injury.
He was taken to Wollongong Hospital before being airlifted.
Fire and Rescue NSW and police also attended the scene.
