The on duty officer at Port Kembla said the call for help was made around 5.30pm when the motor stopped working well off shore.
Flashing lights of the new marine rescue vessel used in the operation could be seen off the Bellambi Boat Ramp after 7pm.
"They needed a tow in," he said.
"They were out a fair way and the broken down vessel needed a tow in.
"They were coming in just before dark when the motor stopped. They checked and there wasn't any oil in the motor and weren't game to keep going.
"It took about an hour-and-a-half from the time they rang until the time they go back to shore.
"The rescue was done in our main boast, the new boat. We have to have a minimum of three people on a rescue boat and we had four on it tonight.
"It was pretty choppy out there so it was good to have an extra hand to help."
