Emergency services were called around 8:43am with Fire and Rescue NSW crews from Bulli, Wollongong, Balgownie, Shellharbour HAZMAT and Corrimal in attendance.
FRNSW Illawarra Duty Commander Jeremy Hood said large volumes of smoke were issuing from the garage with pretty heavy fire activity seen on arrival, which had spread into the roof of the home.
A man, woman, two children and a dog were safely outside after self evacuating prior to the arrival of emergency services.
Inspector Hood said firefighters were able to save all the contents of the family's home, though there was damage to the roof and a wall which needed to be removed so they could "chase the fire".
HAZMAT crews also needed to dispose of compromised fibro sheets believed to be asbestos.
Inspector Hood said they were able to extinguish the blaze fairly quickly. The cause was still being investigated but believed to be an "electrical or mechanical" fire.
