The Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research shows there has been a 23 per cent decline of break and enters of homes in the Wollongong region over the past two years.
In the same period, there has been a 33 per cent decrease in the number of homes broken into in the Shellharbour region.
As a result, some people have reported receiving a reduction in their home insurance premium this year.
A spokesperson for the Insurance Council of Australia said the premium for home insurance and contents insurance is based on the likelihood of a claim being made on the policy in the future and can change year to year.
"Insurers consider many different factors when calculating a premium and may reduce a premium if certain safety and security measures are in place," the spokesperson said.
"It's always worth a call to the insurer around renewal time to talk to them about the risk profile for the property and individual circumstances."
