The Demons broke their 57-year premiership drought on Saturday night with a 74-point thumping of the Western Bulldogs in the grand final in Perth.

Bowey, who only turned 19 on September 12, timed his run to perfection this season.

The 176cm speedster made his AFL debut against Gold Coast in round 20, and he managed to hold his spot for the rest of the campaign.

His introduction sparked a seven-match winning run that took Melbourne all the way to the flag.

Some of the biggest legends in the Demons' storied history never won a premiership, including Jim Stynes, Garry Lyon, David Neitz, Robert Flower and the recently-retired Nathan Jones.

But Bowey did it in his first year - a fact not lost on the red-headed youngster.

"It's crazy. I'm speechless. For my first year - it's remarkable," Bowey told AAP.

"I'm seven and zip, so let's just keep winning I reckon, it's pretty good.

"I thought an under 11s flag was pretty good, but this tops everything I've ever done.

"Dad was the coach for that game, and we came from fourth so we were the underdogs.

"And I got best-on ground in the win, and then I played in the age group above and we won that flag as well on the same day.

"But winning with Melbourne beats the two flags in one day, that's for sure."

Bowey, the No.21 pick from last year's national draft, is the son of former St Kilda rover Brett Bowey.

Brett played 85 games for the Saints between 1988 to 1994, but the closest he got to a flag was a semi-final appearance against the Bulldogs in 1992.

His son has already far surpassed that mark.

"At the start of the year I was just happy to play one game," said Bowey, who tallied 17 disposals in the grand final.

"But I think I took my opportunity pretty well. I played my role each week and I get rewarded with this.

"I supported St Kilda growing up because dad played a few games for them.

"I've still got a soft spot for St Kilda, but this premiership with Melbourne is pretty awesome."

Meanwhile, Melbourne on Monday informed Jay Lockhart, Aaron Nietschke and Austin Bradtke that they will not be offered new contracts.

Hard nut Aaron Vandenberg will seek greater opportunity at a rival club after failing to hold down a spot in the powerful Demons line-up this year, while veteran defender Neville Jetta has retired.

Jetta, 31, played 159 games over 13 seasons with Melbourne but managed just five appearances this season and missed out on the grand final.
