It was competitive game and probably timely for both teams. The match marked Luke Wilkshire's men's first game in months, while the sky blues are continuing to prepare for the A-League Mens season, which starts in a few weeks' time.
As is always the case when a NPL side takes on an A-Leagues team, you tend to lift and make life difficult for your opponent. In the end, Sydney FC were very strong and looked quite good in their 2-0 victory, but the Wolves definitely gave them a good game on Saturday.
For me, Japanese defender Banri Kanaizumi was a standout for the Wolves. He was very strong and kept Sydney FC at bay, and defended well. His performance probably kept it at a two-goal difference. It was a really impressive showing and I think he's going to have a super NPL season for the Wolves next year.
It was great to see a nice turnout down there at Albert Butler Park. I think the sky blues really appreciated the few days training that the Wolves accommodated them at the venue in the lead-up to Saturday's game.
I think the clash provided a great preparation for both teams. The Wolves will now get ready for their FFA Cup round of 32 clash with Mount Druitt at Popondetta Park this weekend, while the sky blues will take on Sydney Olympic in their Cup fixture later this month. Saturday's game gave Sydney FC a taste of what it's like playing an NPL team again.
