The Shellharbour and Kiama MPs have written to Regional Transport and Roads Minister Paul Toole over the issue.

"Anna and I have written to Minister Toole and asked for an audit to look at all issues including safety, and to consider removing the lights altogether," Mr Ward said.

The interchange has five sets of lights and became the first fully signalised roundabout in NSW when they were switched on in June.

Since then the two MPs have been fielding complaints from drivers saying the lights have increased congestion and confusion.

Mr Ward said the lights were a blemish on the Albion Park Rail bypass project.

"It sours the whole project a little bit," he said.

"The whole point of the bypass was to take lights off the highway, not add more on. And I thought the point of having roundabouts was that you didn't need traffic lights."

The plan to place lights at the interchange was revealed by the Mercury back in 2018 but Mr Ward said there was a reason they did not oppose the installation then.

"You never know the true value of traffic treatments until you see them in operation once a project is complete," he said.

"We now have the Albion Park Rail bypass open and I was assured that the treatment wouldn't be detrimental, but sometimes when you experience these things in real life you realise they don't necessarily live up to what the traffic experts had anticipated."
