DeRozan had 38 points on 15-of-23 shooting while Ball made seven 3-pointers and was 10 of 13 from the field in his tally of 27 points against their star-studded opponents, who were without LeBron James (abdominal strain) for a seventh straight game.

Monday's win was the second huge outing in two nights for DeRozan, a Los Angeles-area native playing at the Staples Center for the first two times since the death of his father earlier this year.

He had poured in 35 points on 12-of-16 shooting in Sunday's 100-90 win over the Los Angeles Clippers.

"Every night you've got to find some type of extra motivation," said DeRozan. "We've got a couple of guys that played here, (others who are) from here."

Talen Horton-Tucker scored a career-high 28 points and Russell Westbrook recorded 25 points, eight assists and six rebounds for the Lakers, who are just 8-7 despite opening the season with 12 of 15 games at home.

Lakers centre Anthony Davis had 20 points and six rebounds before drawing his second technical foul in the third quarter to earn an ejection.

Chicago improved their impressive season record to 10-4 and sit second in the eastern conference.

"I think we are one of the top teams in the NBA," Ball said. "We've still got a lot to improve on and a long way to go, but I think we're moving in the right direction."

In Dallas, Denver star Nikola Jokic's season-high 35 points and 16 rebounds weren't enough to prevent a 111-101 loss to the Mavericks in a battle of two highly-rated western conference teams.

Kristaps Porzingis had 29 points and 11 rebounds while Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 13 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter for the Mavericks as they rallied to claim the home victory.

In Minneapolis, the Phoenix Suns extended their NBA-leading winning streak to nine matches with a 99-96 win over Minnesota Timberwolves.

Chris Paul scored 19 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter and Devin Booker had 29 for the Suns who remain second in the west.

Deandre Ayton had 22 points and 12 rebounds in his return to the Suns after missing five games with injury.

In Oklahoma City, Australian rookie Josh Giddey had six points, nine rebounds and nine assists as his Thunder team lost 103-90 to the Miami Heat.

Duncan Robinson scored 21 points and Kyle Lowry added 11 points and 11 assists for the Heat, who were without stars Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo.

For the Thunder, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who entered the night averaging 22.6 points per game, finished with a season-low 10 on 2-of-11 shooting.
