However, Shell Cove resident Leah Karberg was treated to this unexpected sight early Tuesday morning when she came across a wombat trundling along Cormorant Drive, near the new marina.
She ushered it off the road to keep it safe and called WIRES to check it out, but it appeared healthy.
The wombat was last seen walking into the vacant blocks off Aquatic Drive.
Ms Karberg said she had never seen a wombat there, and hadn't even spotted one when she lived in the more rural Tullimbar.
After Ms Karberg shared photos on social media, one person replied that they hadn't seen a wombat in Shell Cove for 15 years.

Wombats are nocturnal animals but can be seen in the early morning; they are known to travel up to three kilometres a night looking for food.
Anyone who sees a wild animal that might be in distress should call WIRES on 1300 094 737.
