Carey has been an outstanding leader, mentor and friend to many. He has worked at council for more than a decade. Under his steady leadership council was awarded NSW local government's highest honour, the AR Bluett Memorial Award.
The prize, awarded annually since 1945, recognises a council's achievements in delivering value to the community and its commitment to strategic planning, financial sustainability, innovation, continuous improvement and community engagement.
During his time as CEO, Carey also oversaw several major projects including the construction of the Shellharbour Civic Centre and the Shellharbour Marina.
He also successfully led council through the difficulties of the COVID-19 pandemic and the threat of amalgamation. I was extremely fortunate to benefit from his expertise, which helped facilitate a smooth and respectful transition into my new role as Mayor.
I wish him all the very best in his new role and thank him for his service to our community.
Be a good neighbour
The last Sunday in March was National Neighbour Day, a day that recognises the people who make our neighbourhoods great.
The event highlights the importance of community connections. Neighbour Day aims to increase positive and sustainable social relationships between people and communities.
Building these connections strengthens communities. The support that good neighbours can provide is endless.
Even simple things are valuable, such as checking in and having a chat, taking the bins out, or looking after pets while neighbours are away.
I encourage you all to reach out, connect and get to know your neighbours.
