The 40-year-old, who is the nephew of former Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness, spent two terms at Hoffenheim and his contract ran to 2023.

After Adi Hutter (Borussia Monchengladbach), Markus Weinzierl (Augsburg) and Florian Kohfeldt (Wolfsburg), Hoeness is the fourth coach to leave post at the end of the campaign. Relegated Greuther Furth have also said their coach Stefan Leitl would depart for Hanover.

"We had already begun analysis before the last matchday, that the results and events of the past two months have overshadowed much of the many positive aspects that this season that took us up to fourth place in the interim," Hoffenheim sporting director Alexander Rosen said on Tuesday of the decision.

A 5-1 thrashing by Gladbach on the final day saw Hoffenheim end the season ninth and miss out on the European place which once seemed certain.

"It's unexplainable how we've collapsed," goalkeeper Oliver Baumann said after that game. "It wasn't only a bad phase, it was nine games. That's too long."
