The Summerground Festival was a mid-city music event to run over three days at Tumbalong Park.
"Changing consumer behaviours, cost of living pressures and mounting operational expenses are having an impact on many large music festivals nationwide and unfortunately, Summerground was not immune from these factors," organisers said in a statement on Thursday.
The first night of Summerground was to have featured Cimafunk (billed as the James Brown of Cuba) and his band of Havana all-stars, as well as Tanzanian-Australian singer-songwriter Beckah Amani.
Blues band the Teskey Brothers was also on the bill, with King Stingray and acid jazz pioneers, The Brand New Heavies.
People who have already bought tickets have been promised a full refund.
The rest of the Sydney Festival lineup, including a range of other musical performances, has not been affected according to organisers, with more than 130 events to be held during January.
