Tomasson, who recently resigned as manager of English second-tier side Blackburn Rovers, has signed a contract which extends to the qualification campaign for the 2026 World Cup, which will be automatically extended upon advancement.
"I'm very much looking forward to starting this great assignment and meeting supporters, players and of course the media in Sweden. And to be able to think, speak and dream in blue and yellow," the 47-year-old said on Monday.
Tomasson made 112 appearances for Denmark and takes over from Janne Andersson who left the role following Sweden's failure to qualify for Euro 2024 when they finished third in their group behind Belgium and Austria.
Kim Kallstrom, the federation's football manager, said the arrival of Tomasson will lead to a new playing style in the team.
"Jon Dahl Tomasson's way of wanting to play positive attacking football is something that will suit our group of players well," Kallstrom said. "He also has good experience of being a leading figure, which you naturally become with the Swedish men's national team."
The former Milan, Feyenoord, Newcastle and Stuttgart forward has coaching experience at international level as an assistant to the Danish team and in Sweden as Malmo manager.
