Basin Reserve, Wellington, Day Four
SCORE: Australia, 383 and 164, won by 172 over New Zealand, 179 and 196
SUMMARY: From 3-111, New Zealand's attempt to set a record target-chase of 369 barely got off the ground. In Sunday's seventh over, Lyon claimed a double-wicket maiden to hush the Basin Reserve crowd and make the Kiwis' improbable effort near-impossible. New Zealand's resistance to Australia's attack was meek, losing 7-85 to relinquish the Test right on lunch on day four. Lyon finished with 6-65, with Cam Green, Travis Head and Josh Hazlewood also chiming in with wickets. It was particularly fitting Hazlewood closed out the match - with a caught and bowled of Daryl Mitchell - given his hand in a match-turning 116-run 10th-wicket stand with Green during Australia's first innings.
PLAYER OF THE MOMENT: Lyon. Green was a deserved man of the match for his first-innings 174, but Lyon was crucial in cracking the Kiwis open with Sunday's first three wickets, including key men Rachin Ravindra, Tom Blundell and Glenn Phillips.
STAT OF THE DAY: Australia's win means they can't lose the two-Test series and will hold onto the Trans-Tasman Trophy, extending their possession of the silverware to 30 years and counting. Given the next series is scheduled for 2026-27 in Australia, that run will stretch to at least 33 years.
