While health authorities are pleased to see a drop in COVID-19 cases across the region, there is a call for more testing in Bathurst. On Monday, the Western NSW Local Health District (WNSWLHD) recorded just 10 cases, with six in Dubbo, three in Walgett and one in Cowra. While there was none for Bathurst, WNSWLHD Chief Executive Scott McLachlan called for more testing in the region, especially as there were 611 tests in the local government area across the weekend. "It is pleasing to see lower numbers, particularly a lower number of people infectious in he community," he said. READ MORE: "What I would say that around Bathurst we are concerned that there's been people infectious in the community in the last week and the testing numbers are nearly at a record low. "Even with surveillance testing enabled for Bathurst, we'd be very keen to see those testing numbers double or even triple in the coming days." While Bathurst recorded over 600 tests across the weekend, that is way less than the 1070 in Cowra on the weekend, a concern considering the massive difference in population in the two areas (Cowra 12,000 and Bathurst 41,000). Mr McLachlan also said that a majority of COVID-19 cases are recovering from the virus within 14 days but said some may take longer to recover if they have an underlying health issue. "The vast majority of people do get over their COVID infection within 14 days," he said. "But for some people that have got other underlying health conditions whether it's a chronic respiratory or lung condition, heart failure or other thing, it may take a bit longer. We know the infection can hang around in some bodies for a bit longer than others. "The vast majority do get over it within the 14 days and the vast majority are being discharged from our care and the community COVID program. "There's some really positive signs there."
