For her entire life she has lived with older brother Jared, who was born with cerebral palsy and is unable to talk or walk.
The experience has motivated the 25-year-old and her parents Jon and Frances Pinkerton to do whatever they can for other families in a similar situation.
"My brother went to ParaMeadows and my mum and two other women who had children at the school set up the ParaMeadows Foundation ... to raise money for other children in the Illawarra who have disabilities and need equipment," she said.
Ms Pinkerton helped out at the foundation's charity events and later became a registered nurse.
But now she is looking at more opportunities to help and one of her goals is to establish a not-for-profit organisation in the Illawarra for siblings of people with a disability, to share their social and emotional issues.
"There were so many times as a child and as an adolescent where I really wanted to speak to somebody who was in the same situation as me," she said.
"I think it is really important because there is no existing organisation for that specific situation. I would love to be able to provide that for other people in the Illawarra."
Ms Pinkerton has had a lot of time to think about the idea since a bad snowboard accident in 2011 severely damaged her pelvis.
Unable to work for the past 18 months she used the time to do whatever she could to help other people and recently decided to enter Miss World Australia.
"My aim in this competition is to win the beauty with a purpose section. I want to raise as much money as I possibly can."
She is also asking for assistance in helping people in a remote Aboriginal community in the Northern Territory.
The Facebook page Jesy Pinkerton for Miss World Australia 2013 has details about coming events including a trivia night in March and April golf day.
