Parts of Kiama have officially been declared a disaster zone by Prime Minister Julia Gillard and Premier Barry O’Farrell.
The announcement came just after 5pm today following Mr O’Farrell’s visit to Kiama and aerial tour of the affected streets.
The declaration unlocks a number of disaster assistance schemes to help with recovery funded by both state and federal governments.
The funding can be used by residents, businesses, farmers and councils to fix any damage caused by the storm event.
Kiama was one of 11 local government areas affected by severe storms and flooding across the state on Sunday which was declared a disaster zone today.
Kiama MP Gareth Ward contacted the Insurance Industry Council and asked them to set up a hotline which has been done.
Mr Ward said anyone who had an insurance claim to make as a result of Sunday’s disaster could phone 1800 734 621 to have their claim assessment expedited.
