Dapto Public School adapted Mem Fox's well-known picture book Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge into a story dance called What's A Memory? for the nationwide performance challenge for schools. The 116 students in the cast and crew of the school's production found they won last Friday via an announcement on Wakakirri TV.
They performed their story dance at the WIN Entertainment Centre on August 8.
The school has been competing in Wakakirri since 2007 and came second in the Wollongong series last year.
Dance group co-ordinator Jane Nordstrom said she knew the students had done a great job but they were up against some tough competition.
"Creating the story dance is something we do every year and for all of ours, we try to come with a personal message and have always gone down that road of a bit of personal development for the kids," she said.
"They were familiar with the story to start with but also I think, it brought up a lot of social issues about not only being a good friend to people but also caring enough about people to help.
"It's a very moving, touching story that came across beautifully on stage. There wasn't a dry eye in the house."
Dapto Public School is now in the running for the national Wakakirri title, decided in November after judges watch the performances on DVD.
