Red Point Artists Association Incorporated last year received the community award in Wollongong City Council’s Australia Day Awards.
They won the award mainly because of the work they did in reviving the Port Kembla Billy Cart Derby after a 25-year hiatus.
An estimated crowd of 15,000 people flocked to Port Kembla for the 2012 Port Kembla Billy Cart Derby.
Red Point president Dulcie Dal Molin said that after the success of last year’s event, the derby had to stay.
Organisers are expecting more than 150 entries for the November 16 event.
Mrs Dal Molin said there would be some changes this year, including a rule of ‘‘one cart, one driver and one event’’.
‘‘So, unlike last year, a cart can’t go in several events – just the one,’’ she said.
‘‘It will make it a much easier event to run.
‘‘There will be seven division of cart races, including a new adult soapbox edition.
‘‘This way, when dad builds a soapbox cart for the kids, he can also build one for himself.’’
To enter before November 1 or for more details visit redpointart.org.au or the Port Kembla Billy Cart Derby Official 2013 Facebook page.
Meantime, Mrs Dal Molin encouraged residents to nominate suitable candidates for the Wollongong City Council’s different Australia Day Awards before the December 5 cut-off date.
Award categories include citizen of the year, senior citizen of the year, young citizen of the year, cultural award, community award and sports award.
The award winners will be announced at a special Australia Day dinner on January 23.
