In addition to the traditional fireworks displays, rides, music and food, Wollongong City Council is pushing for Belmore Basin to host the likes of Batman, Wonder Woman and Captain America.
"We're asking everyone to dress in their favourite superhero costume on the night," said Lord Mayor Gordon Bradbery, adding a costume competition would run during the evening.
After a game against the Melbourne Tigers at WIN Entertainment Centre, players from the Wollongong Hawks will join the festivities by hosting a signing and meet-and-greet session in Lang Park.
The free 9pm fireworks will return, as will favourite amusement park rides, entertainment from the City of Wollongong Brass Band, and food stalls.
Parts of Cliff Drive and Harbour Street will be closed from 5pm, council recommending New Year's revellers travel using public transport and the Gong Shuttle Bus.
