Whether drawing pictures of storybook characters, listening to authors such as Lilli Rodriques-Pang tell a story, or writing poetry, there was plenty to keep the kids entertained all day.
About a dozen children's authors ran activities including crafts, drawing, jokes, plays, a teamwork workshop for older children and a film and author discussion.
The children, aged between two and 12, were also encouraged to dress up as their favourite character for a chance to win a prize.
Margaret Wolfe, branch secretary of the Illawarra-South Coast Children's Book Council, which organised the event with the help of Wollongong City Council, said the school holiday program aimed to foster a love of reading in children.
"And how important it is to get away from the computer and have a book in their hand," she said.
"The joy of a printed, coloured book - there's no comparison."
