The Postcodes From The Edge competition is challenging artists living inside the postcode boundaries of 2534 in the south, 2508 in the north and 2576 in the west to create a work reflecting the Illawarra region.
President of Wollongong Art Gallery Friends, Alan Samways, said the prize offered a chance for local people to explore local issues or scenes.
‘‘We’re after small-format contemporary artworks,’’ Mr Samways said.
‘‘We want to enhance and display the art of the Illawarra and its artists.’’
Judges will award $3000 for first place, with $1500 and $500 to second and third respectively.
Mr Samways expects ‘‘many hundreds’’ of entries, with entrants to receive a complimentary one-year membership to the Friends society.
‘‘We’ve made the theme more open than in previous years, so we can put it out to more people – all local people, school groups, out to the Highlands,’’ he said.
Entries will be hung in the gallery as part of a special exhibition.
‘‘We will also hang all the pictures in postcode groups, so you can walk through and see images from your area,’’ Mr Samways said.
‘‘Every picture that we receive will be hung in the Wollongong Art Gallery.’’
Entries for the competition close on February 21, with the exhibition to run from March 14 to May 11.
