Ambulance crews and the rescue helicopter were called to the popular hang-gliding site shortly before 5pm for a hang-glider who had crashed into the rocks at Stanwell Park Beach.
On arrival they found the male in the water. It is understood he lost control of the glider and ended up in the water.
He was in the water for 15-20 minutes before he made it to shore with the help of local surf lifesavers.
Once ashore he was treated for hypothermia-like symptoms and abrasions to his lower limbs.
The man was then taken by ambulance to Wollongong Hospital.
