University can wrap up the minor premiership this weekend against Wests after ousting title rivals Albion Park 4-1 in round 18 of the Illawarra first grade.
The Students continued their dominant season in their triumph over the defending champions, extending their unbeaten streak to 16 games in the region's top division.
It put them 10 points clear at the top of the competition with four rounds remaining.
"The whole game was a bit slow. It wasn't as counter-attacking from them and that helped a bit," Uni's Heath Ogilvie said.
"Individually the guys [Cam Parsons and Ross Sharpe] who marked Blake Govers defensively were good.
"They held possession a lot and kept them under the pump at the back so they didn't get too many breakaways. It helped control the tempo of the game."
University will secure the minor premiership this weekend against should they defeat Wests.
Ogilvie expects the Students' third-placed opponents to challenge strongly.
In the women's top grade, Albion Park look to bounce back from their first loss when they play Figtree Unanderra.
