Police confirmed Thursday afternoon the body was that of Jarrod Dark, a 45-year-old man from Fairfield.
He had travelled to the beach with two men aged 37 and 43, who he met through social media.
The two men, also from Fairfield, assisted police with inquiries before being released without charge on Tuesday night.
Mr Dark’s body was found in the early hours of Tuesday morning on a walking track leading to Werrong Beach, also known as Hell Hole Beach.
The men said Mr Dark, who was found with his hands tied behind his back, became violent and they were forced to restrain him.
The two men then left Mr Dark at the beach and travelled to Canterbury hospital for medical treatment– one hour, or 50 kilometres away, bypassing closer hospitals at Sutherland, Hurstville - for head wounds sustained during their altercation.
The men contacted police about the incident.
A post mortem was conducted at Glebe on Wednesday, with the cause of death still unknown.
Police are continuing with their investigation and want anyone with information about the man’s death to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
