This year, crowds lining Wentworth Street for the race can expect to see carts with new streamlined features - a far cry from the days of carts built with pram and golf-buggy wheels.
The derby's four soap box divisions will be sponsored by the Port Authority of NSW, which has backed the event in some capacity since it was revived in 2012.
Port Authority chief executive Grant Gilfillan said although the billycarts had to stick to strict specifications, there was still room for refinements.
"Today's models have to conform to safety rules, but that doesn't stop cart-builders improving on traditional models," he said.
Entries for the derby can be received each Wednesday from 10am to 1pm at the billycart derby office at 100 Wentworth Street. The last entries will be accepted on November 1.
