Emergency services were contacted shortly before 2pm, after the 60-year-old woman entered rough surf off the beach near WIN Stadium.
Marine Rescue NSW and surf life saving crews from North Wollongong responded to the incident.
‘‘Police contacted the emergency number at our call centre and we activated two rescue boats,’’ Surf Life Saving Illawarra director Anthony Turner said.
‘‘The IRBs responded out there and Marine Rescue also attended the scene ... and she was basically picked up by our IRB crew and returned back to shore.’’
The woman was reportedly in the water for around 45 minutes, as rescue crews battled 80 to 90km/h winds and significant wind chop.
She was suffering from exhaustion when she was retrieved from the water, and placed in the recovery position by attending lifesavers.
Paramedics treated the woman on the shore, before transferring her to Wollongong Hospital.
